Generic and unconventional

A single TLD enables end users to freely select any unallocated domain name literally on a first come first serve basis. This has resulted in the best ones being taken. In the case of generic or common names, this leads to the use of a domain name and this is inaccurate and misleading. This problem ripples down to the questionable ownership or control of domain names for a particular service or product.

Critics feel that there is greater amenity in reserving common domain names for exclusive use, since related issues could arise with the use of non commercial domain names. Also, due to the rare one-word dot-com domain names, a number of unconventional domain names have become increasingly popular. These are also referred to as domain hacks. They make use of the top-level domain within the web site title. Unconventional domain names naturally end up generating unconventional email addresses and the ripple widens.
